The more births I attend as a doula, the more I see the impact a nurse can have on a mother’s birth.
First I would like to say most of the nurses are GREAT! I love L & D nurses. But sometimes a nurse just doesn’t mesh with a mom or her desires. Sometimes a nurse [...]

This mom had to fight for her right to birth vaginally in her hospital. It is unfortunate that she had to litterally fight, but I am so proud of her. It shows how some care providers try to emotionally manipulate their patients to do what they want. It also shows how in the end it is [...]

The Trust Birth Conference was very interesting. It was fun talking with other doulas there. We had one group discussion and someone talked about how our work as Doula’s can be effected by our births.
It made me think of my 2 cesareans I have attended as a doula.
I always was nervous how supporting a mom [...]

The end of 2007 I attended two very long births back to back. Out of 63 hours I was gone 57. I was home for a few hours of sleep between them. I missed my 2 year olds birthday and honestly I don’t know where my boys were during that whole time. I wasn’t worried, [...]

I have had 2 moms who were going to have their babies at any time for the past few weeks. They also happen to be good friends, so I really wanted to make sure I made it to both births!
Birth 1 - hospital birth
S. was having her 4th baby. She had never gone past 37 weeks [...]

Here is the article. Here is my response.
This is really a shame that this mom had a negative experiences with her doula. My role as a doula is to support the mom in whatever SHE wants. This isn’t MY birth, it is HERS! I would NEVER leave a mother during her birthing time, no matter [...]

I would love to go through each part of the statement and despute it… but I don’t have to, because someone else did a GREAT job doing it and I am just going to send you over to the House of Harris Blog and read what she said. I wholeheartedly agree!

This is a topic that really presses my buttons. I think it is safe… but let’s see others say.
1) I love this meaty article from the Journal of Perinatal Education it includes a lot of great links and information in here and basically comes to this conclusion
…no detrimental effects on maternal or neonatal outcomes have [...]

I asked a nurse what I could have done differently during this birth. She pointed out that this nurse was probably operating from fear. Fear that something might go wrong and she would get blamed.
That helped me to reframe it a bit. I think that I need to remember my doula clients have all taken [...]
